The back half of a career is where legacy is decided, and it is also where most players fall off a cliff they never see coming. Decline is not a single switch — it is mileage meeting age.
Mileage is the real clock
Age tells you when decline can start. Mileage tells you how hard it hits. Heavy minutes, deep playoff runs and low durability all add mileage, which is why two players who retire at the same age can have wildly different final seasons.
Trade volume for value
Once decline begins, chasing usage accelerates the fall. Moving to a contender in a smaller role slows mileage accumulation while keeping your ring odds high, which is exactly the trade legacy score rewards.
Spend down your bank
Money you retire with is worth nothing. If any attribute still shows headroom on the receipt, spend into it — a single extra point of a weighted attribute can be the difference between a fringe award season and a real one.
Know when to walk
Retiring on a strong season protects the averages that feed your legacy tier. Grinding out two replacement-level years to pad counting stats usually costs more in rate stats than it adds in totals.
